A. Hi Phil, thank you for your question. The switch can handle up to 1A on the flow switch, if the fan is rated over this then a mains relay and base would be required.

Q. Hi there I have 2 of these switches, which I just removed from the pipe to use elsewhere - but now I have the horrible feeling that that was a mistake - could you tell me whether they could be used on a different pipe / could be reattached to the original / or should go in the bin?
A. Hi Paul, thank you for your question. Unfortunately these are factory fitted and cannot be successfully removed/replaced on different pipe.

Q. I am thinking of using this float switch to activate the pump on the secondary return of an unvented Domestic Hot water system (not ideal but necessary). I would prefer not to go through 12v DC relay etc. - what is the best way to with the 240v supply directly please?
A. Hi David, thank you for your question. You can use a mains coil relay with the sensor in series to energise the relay and use the relay contacts to power the pump up to 10A. You require 60-1676 (power relay) and 60-1677 (base).

Q. Hi, I am planning on using this as a sensor to trigger an led when water is flowing through the pipe. Water will only through this for a around 1 hour per day and the led will give me a visual indication that all is good. Would this be suitable for this application? Also the 2 black wires, are these a normal plus and minus connection for a DC connection?
A. Hi Richard. Thank you for your question. The two black wires are the switch wires which will make when there is a detected water flow and be open when there is no flow. You would need a simple circuit that has its own supply voltage to a suitable LED that will be switched on/off via the flow switch.

Q. Hi, Can this switch also be used horizontally? I want to switch in a pump when waste water enters a holding tank, under the floor on a boat. Thank you
A. Hi Dave. Thank you for your question. These are designed to be used vertical due to the reed switch inside the pipe - we have never tried using the other way. We are quite sure they will not work horizontally as the manufacturer only mentions used vertically.

Q. I'm trying to develop a system to remove waste water from a proposed shower in my home. I am hoping be possible to use this switch to activate a low cost 12v shower waste pump. I would need a power supply 240v ac to 12v dc. Could you recommend the best set-up to make this idea work?
A. Hi Andrew. Thank you for your question. It would be possible to use the flow switch to operate a 12V relay, allowing a higher current draw for the pump – this way just one supply need be used and that will be dictated by the power requirement of the pump. This would also keep mains voltage away from the water supply. It is a good idea to use a diode in reverse bias across the relay to reduce back emf which can cause the switch to stick

Q. The specs state this should be fitted vertically, while noting the direction of flow, but I can't see any indication anywhere whether it matters if the flow is up (against gravity) or down. Does it matter?
A. Thanks for your enquiry Paul. It doesn't really matter, the unit is activated by flow of water however if the pipe is likely to empty then the direction of flow should be against gravity or the internal magnet will activate the switch ie the water should go upwards.

Q. I am looking for a switch so that when i turn the the water on in a power shower i want the light to come on and vice versa. Regards Rich.
A. Thanks for your enquiry Rich. This would do it but the unit comes as a complete item with pipe as shown so it would have to be inserted into the water pipe of the shower. Though it can deal with mains voltage, we don’t think that mains and water are a good combination so we would suggest this unit is used to switch a 12vDC supply to a relay for the mains supply.

A. Thanks for your enquiry Stephen. This flow switch runs on DC up to 300 v so will switch a 230 relay as long as it is a DC version

Neat solution

This neat little switch is the perfect solution for extractor fans. Putting one in the supply line to a toilet cistern means the fan is triggered whenever the toilet is flushed. Also works if used with a shower. The 15mm copper pipe accepts any standard push-fit or compression fitting. Don't try solder though! The only thing to remember is that the pipe run must be vertical with the flow upwards, so you need to bring the supply dow, then back up to the using device. In terms of current, you should in any case be using a timer delay on your fan, so the switch only takes the triggering current. I have used these switches in three such installations so far, and they work perfectly.
