The DFRobot soil moisture sensor can read the amount of moisture present in the soil surrounding it. It's ideal for monitoring an urban garden, or your pet plant's water level. This is a must have component for a IOT garden!

The soil moisture sensor uses Immersion Gold to protect the nickel probes from oxidation. The sensor uses two probes to pass current through the soil and then it reads that resistance to calculate the moisture level. More water makes the soil conduct electricity more easily (less resistance), while dry soil conducts electricity poorly (more resistance). The sensor will be helpful to remind you to water your indoor plants or to monitor the soil moisture in your garden.

The sensor has a Gravity Interface to allow plug & play operation. The DFRobot Arduino IO Expansion Shield is the best option for connecting the sensor to your Arduino. As this sensor can work at 3.3V it is compatible with Raspberry Pi, Intel Edison, Joule and Curie.

Note: If you are going to use the sensor in very humid soil, it may suffer from surface erosion and for this application the use of the DFRobot Analogue Capacitive Soil Moisture Sensor- Corrosion Resistant is rocommended.
