The Adafruit FLORA Accelerometer and Compass Sensor uses the popular LSM303DLHC chip which contains a classic 3-axis accelerometer and a magnetometer. The accelerometer can detect orientation relative to the Earth's gravity and has a selectable full scale range of ±2, 4, 9 or 16g. The magnetometer detects the direction of the strongest magnetic field and can measure between ±1.3 to 1.8 gauss (±1.3 x 10-4 to 1.8 x 10-4 Tesla). Interfacing to the FLORA main board is very simple using I2C. The chip also has a temperature sensor although it isn't calibrated, so it can be used for measuring temperature changes rather than absolute values.
Adafruit provide a free tutorial and an Arduino library to get you started.
