The Olimex PIC-MCP-USB is a PicStart+ compatible PIC programmer with and on-board ZIF socket and an ICSP connection to a target system. PIC-MCP programs all PIC microcontrollers except the PIC17 series. Because it has a native USB port there is no need for a USB to serial cable or virtual serial ports on the PC unlike some other programmers, and the USB port also supplies power to the device. The programmer is compatible with Microchip's MPLAB rather than MPLAB X.

Q. I have received my Olimex MCP-USB Microchip Picstart+ Compatible Programmer for MPLAB 8 and cannot find how to connect power to the card is this now provided through USB lead.
A. Hi Brian, thank you for your question. The manufacturer states it "generates RS232 signals and power supply from the USB port".
