How do I choose the right fuse?
Start with the normal operating current and choose a rating a little above it — enough to carry the load without nuisance blowing, but low enough to clear a genuine fault. Then the voltage rating, which must meet or exceed the circuit's, and the breaking capacity: the largest fault current the fuse can interrupt safely, which matters most on mains and industrial supplies. Speed comes next — fast-acting to protect sensitive electronics, or time-delay (anti-surge) to ride out the inrush of motors and power supplies. Form factor and holder then follow the board or panel.
Fuse or circuit breaker?
A fuse is simple, fast and inexpensive, and clears a fault decisively — but it is single-use and has to be replaced. A circuit breaker trips and resets, so it suits circuits where faults are expected or access is awkward, and it can double as a switch, at higher cost and size. For a middle ground, resettable PTC fuses recover on their own once the fault is removed, which suits sealed or hard-to-reach electronics. Choose fuses for simple, decisive protection; breakers where resettability or switching earns its keep.
What protection do I need for automotive, solar or industrial work?
The right part is application-specific. Automotive fuses and holders cover 12 and 24 V vehicle and off-highway wiring; industrial fuses handle the higher breaking capacities of plant and machinery; and photovoltaic fuses are rated for the DC strings of a solar array. For board-level protection, axial-lead and PCB and SMD types solder straight down, and bus bars distribute and protect power across a panel.
