How do I choose a crimp terminal?
- Terminal type — ring, spade, fork, butt or ferrule, to suit the connection.
- Wire size — colour-coded: red (0.5–1.5mm²), blue (1.5–2.5mm²), yellow (4–6mm²).
- Stud or tab size — match the ring or spade to the screw or terminal.
- Insulated or uninsulated — insulated for general wiring, uninsulated where you add your own sleeving.

What is a bootlace ferrule?
A bootlace ferrule is a metal sleeve crimped onto the end of a stranded wire, so the strands stay together and grip firmly in a terminal. It gives a neat, reliable connection and is standard practice in control panels and terminal blocks.
What do the crimp terminal colours mean?
The insulation colour codes the wire size the terminal accepts: red for roughly 0.5–1.5mm², blue for 1.5–2.5mm², and yellow for 4–6mm². Match the colour to your conductor for a secure crimp.
What is the difference between a butt connector and a splice connector?
A butt connector joins two wires end to end in a single sleeve. A splice or inline connector also joins wires but can tap into a run or link several conductors. Both are crimped; some are heat-shrink or gel-filled for sealing.
Do I need insulated or uninsulated crimp terminals?
Insulated terminals have a coloured sleeve that protects the joint and codes the wire size, ideal for general wiring. Uninsulated terminals suit high-density or high-temperature work where you add your own sleeving or heat shrink.
How do I crimp a terminal properly?
Strip the wire to the right length, insert it fully into the barrel, and crimp with the matching ratchet tool until it releases. A good crimp grips the conductor tightly with no loose strands and passes a firm tug test.
