GENIE Microcontrollers Version 1

<P><STRONG>GENIE</STRONG> is a low-cost microcontroller programming system designed exclusively for schools and colleges. The free, user-friendly flowchart software allows you to add intelligence and control to your new and existing design projects. No separate programmer is required and downloading is via a USB or serial cable.<BR><BR>The heart of the <GENIE< strong>microcontroller system is the microcontoller IC, available in 8, 14, 18, 20 and 28-pin versions. It is possible to run multiple programs at the same time on a single chip and also to run and test programs live on a connected <STRONG>GENIE</STRONG> chip.<BR><BR>The chips are designed to work with the <STRONG>GENIE</STRONG> flowchart programming software for Microsoft Windows&#8482; and there are free online resources and community website at <A class=bluelink href="http://www.genieonline.com.">www.genieonline.com.</A></P><P><FONT size=4><STRONG>This version has been superseded by a new generation of GENIE ICs, which benefit from lower prices. Q. For another project I already have a number of TTL 232R 5V FTDI USB cables - is there any reason why they wouldn't work on my Genie C14 kit boards?
A. Hi Jan. Thank you for your question. You must use the Genie USB cable with the Genie software.

Q. Hi, I use the C08 Project Kit with my student but the legs on the socket the chip fits into in a lot of cases come loose. What sockets is supplied with the C08?
A. Hi Conor. Thank you for your question. The replacement sockets can be found here. We sell them in a tube of 60.

Q. What is the voltage out put for the genie 20
A. Hi Alex. Thank you for your question. The outputs for the Genie are transistor buffered so the output voltage expected would be slightly less than the supply voltage so a 5V supply will output approximately 4.5V.

Q. How does a Genie 08 chip work
A. Hi Billy. Thank you for your question. The question is a bit broad really - I have enclosed a link that explains how chips work. This may be of more help.

18 February 2013 Question by: Rapid Customer
Q. What is the difference between genie and picaxe?
A. Hi Jack. Thank you for your question. Genie is mainly aimed at beginners. The free software allows flowchart programming only. Genie can be programmed in BASIC but not for free - you have to buy the circuit wizard software to be able to write code. Picaxe is more advanced and allows flowcharts or BASIC coding from the free software. The choice depends what level you are at and what programming experience you have had and what you are aiming to achieve.

Q. How do I wire a download socket to a C14 chip in Circuit Wizard?
A. Hi Hayden. Thank you for your question. The last page of the data sheet shows a typical circuit diagram for connections.

26 January 2013 Question by: Rapid Customer | Product code: 13-6003
Q. Hi, does every genie microcontroller comes with the download socket?
A. Hi Jos. Thank you for your question. The download socket is not included with just the chips. However the project kits have the download socket.

31 December 2012 Question by: Rapid Customer | Product code: 13-6005
Q. Having recently ordered an E28 IC, the one which I received says it is a PIC16f883. Is this correct or is the chip an E28?
A. Hi Stephen. Thank you for your question. These are the same as a E28 or are just sometimes the manufacturers do not mark them up.

06 December 2012 Question by: Rapid Customer
Q. Wiith the E28 genie chip, how many drivers has it got and how many motors can i run off it
A. Hi Jordan. Thank you for your question. This will be able to run 8 motors. A data sheet detailing the Genie E28 project board has been added to 13-6005 and will be available from tomorrow.

Q. Hi there! I wanted to know if the genie chips are programmable in C? If yes then which software shud i use to compile the code on em, as I already have 'Circuit Wizard' and tht supports 'BASIC'..
A. Hi Anosh, thanks for your question. C is not compatible as far as we are aware. However, the developer New Wave Concepts may be able to tell you if this will be possible in the future. You can use the support option to send them an email below: http://www.genieonline.com/

20 July 2012 Question by: Rapid Customer
Q. My school uses the traditional style '9 pin' serial PICAXE cable for all PICAXE circuits, terminating in a 3-pin header on the PCBs. Would this be compatable with Genie C08 circuits
A. Hi Rob, PiCAXE cables are not recommended for use with Genie hardware.

13 June 2012 Question by: Rapid Customer | Product code: 13-6023
Q. I can't find a code for the Genie download socket. Can you help?
A. Hi Michael, thanks for your question. The code for the Genie download socket is 20-0137.

21 May 2012 Question by: Rapid Customer
Q. Was is the clock frequency of the C08 compared to the PICAXE 8M2
A. Hi Neil, thanks for your question. Genie is limited to 4mhz . The picaxe 08m2 can operates up to 32mhz . The default is 4mhz, but you can set the frequency using a command at the start of your program.

A. Hi Josh, thanks for your question. Yes, you can program onto a Genie chip if you are using 13-6012: https://www.rapidonline.com/Genie-C08-Jukebox-Kit-13-6012

10 January 2012 Question by: Rapid Customer | Product code: 13-6023
Q. Does this cable work with picaxe? If so, which drivers do you use
A. Dear Daniel, thank you for your question. We believe that these are not completely interchangeable so we always recommend the PICAXE USB cable 13-0849 be used for Picaxe applications.
