Q. What is the difference between these four chips? DM7432N, DM7408N, DM7404N, and DM7402N. I know that they represent diferent input gates but what do they each actually do for the computer?
A. Hi LuAnn, thanks for your question. 7432, 7402 carry out different logic functions so depending on the signal inputs – they produce an output under different conditions. 7432 is a quad input OR gate so if a signal is presented to either of its gate – a +ve output will be produced – but not if presented to both. 7402 is the inverse of this and will be positive going to negative. 7408 is also a logic gate so the same applies – for this when 2 signals are presented to the each gate input – a +ve output is produced. 7404 is a hex invert – which will change a six input signal to its opposite polarity – for example all highs to all lows or any combination of the 2 conditions.
