A data logger is a hand-held device using sensors to capture data from an external source. This could be sound, movement, light, temperature, radiation, acidity, human heart rate, even the electronic 'smog' given off by mobile phones and computers. Weather stations and traffic control systems are examples of everyday data logging. Data can be recorded in real time, continuously or at regular intervals over long time periods. The information collected can be sent to a computer and displayed, analysed and stored using bespoke software.
