Q. Dear Sir, I want to run 5mm colour changing Rainbow LEDs on 230Volt AC/50Hz.I want to put 6 LEDs in series. How many such series can be incorporated in a circuit.Kindly suggest me with a circuit.
A. Hi Ramakrishnan, thank you for your question. Connecting these LEDs to the mains directly will be potentially dangerous. Also the LEDs require DC current. We would recommend stepping the mains down to a safer voltage of 24V and 6 in series will work at this voltage.

Q. Is it possible to slow the rate of change for the colour cycling?
A. Hi Paul. Thank you for your question. The colour cycling frequency is pre-determined by the I.C. within the rainbow LED and cannot be adjusted.

Q. can i connect say 2 to a 9 volt battery, will they be ok or will they need a resistor, if so which one???
A. Hi Nicki. Thank you for your question. These need to be on two separate circuits as they interfere with each other if put in series. They are 4.5V LEDs at 30mA so with a 9V feed each LED requires a 150 ohm 1/4W current limiting resistor.

A. Hi Libby. Thank you for your question. They would require 15 volts if connected in series to run all 3.

Q. Can the 5mm rainbow led be used from a 9v supply with a current limiting resistor? Nigel Morgan (reviewer) suggests no as the current varies as the colour changes.
A. Hi Stuart, thanks for your question. A current limiting resistor could be used, all the colours require a max of 30 ma so if set at this all colors would be unaffected.

A. Putting 8 of these LEDs in parallel is fine. This will just require 5 volts each.

Q. How many of these can you run in series off a 9v battery?
A. Hi R, thanks for your question. You can only run 1 in practical terms since as it changes colour it changes to another colour chip – and interrupts the signal very slightly – which would affect any others in series with it. Even at best it would only be 2 max and not very well as it really requires 5V each – but might get away with slightly less.

Q. Can this LED be connected directly to a battery or is a protecting resistor required? Would the LED work adequately with just 3v or are three cells needed (ie 4.5v)? Any idea roughly how long the LED would work from a couple of AA batteries?
A. Thanks for your query, This product will work at 3 volts but really requires a 5v battery. Product life will depend on the ah rating of the battery

Q. What is the time in seconds for the LED to cycle through all 3 colours? The catalogue says it cycles at 1.5Hz, but the 3mm and 10mm LEDs have cycle times of >30s. 1.5Hz seems a bit quick!
A. The cycle time for all 3 colours is 30-40 seconds MAX.
