The Atmel AT89S range are low voltage, high performance CMOS 8-bit microcontrollers that feature In-System Programmable (ISP) Flash program memory. Manufactured using Atmel's high-density nonvolatile memory technololgy these devices are compatible with the industry standard MCS-51 instruction set as well as being functionally compatible with the AT89C2051 microcontroller.
By combining a versatile 8-bit CPU with flash memory on a monolithic chip a powerful microcontroller is produced which provides a highly flexible and cost effective solution for a wide range of embedded control applications. A further addition to an already comprehensive feature set is the support for two software-selectable power saving modes: idle mode which stops the CPU while still allowing the RAM, timers/counters, serial port and interrupt system to continue functioning, and power-down mode which saves the RAM contents but freezes the disabling of all other chip functions until the next external interrupt or hardware reset.
