Collaboration between industry and the government could result in an increase in the level of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) recycling, it has been claimed.
The British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA) has claimed the metal recycling industry is worth £5 billion to the UK economy at present and is at the forefront of the green movement, helping businesses to safely dispose of and reuse WEEE.
"With the right policy and legislative framework in place, the metals recycling industry can continue to lead the way in developing materials recycling and recovery," BMRA deputy president Graham Davy told news provider MRW.
The news follows comments from Tom Dowdall, a Greenpeace international campaigner, who claimed e-waste recycling offers both economic and environmental benefits to businesses.
He argued a reduction in the levels of technological waste that is dumped, exported to or burned in developing countries can only be a positive step and this can be achieved by a greater focus on reusing and recycling old electrical equipment.
