The greater introduction of low-cost OLED technology is helping to reduce costs for LCD TV manufacturers and this is resulting in price falls in the sector for consumers.
Manufacturers have shifted their strategy to focus on lower power consumption and reduced costs, and OLED technology has been seen by many as the perfect technological solution to help achieve these dual goals.
Yoshio Tamura, senior vice president for NPD DisplaySearch, told Global OLED: "Instead of high picture quality, set makers have chosen low-power consumption with a corresponding lower price as selling points for this new type of LED-backlit TV. "
Earlier this month, data compiled by IMS Research revealed the gallium nitride LED sector rose by 60 per cent in 2011, but this level of growth is unlikely to be sustained through the coming year.
Indeed, the report highlighted a widening surplus gap, which is likely to constrain production in 2012.
