ICT teaching 'out of date' in the UK

The teaching of ICT skills to the UK's young people is "out of date" and in desperate need of reform, the government has stated.

Comments from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport yesterday (November 28th) revealed the present system does not do enough to prepare students for entry into major technological fields like games development and visual effects.

Data shows the games sector industry is currently worth more than £2 billion per annum to the UK economy - more than both the film and music industries.

A review carried out earlier this year by Ian Livingstone and Alex Hope stated: "The industries suffer from an education system that doesn't understand our needs."

As such, a major overhaul of ICT teaching needs to be on the cards in the coming years if the UK is to maintain its position as a top producer of IT talent.

The announcement follows comments made by Nick Seaton, secretary of the Campaign for Real Education, who recently claimed there are too many young people leaving the educational system without the necessary grasp on maths and English that is needed in order to be successful in their chosen careers.
