Wonder League Robotics Competition

Wonder League Robotics Competition

Wonder League is a robotics competition with a difference - you can compete against schools from all over the world without needing to leave the comfort of your classroom!

Using the Dash and Dot robots from Wonder Workshop, teams of primary school-aged students work together to complete Missions by programming their robots to perform tasks. Students world-wide are completing the same missions and uploading their solutions to the Wonder League so you can see how you are doing against the rest of the world!

The Rapid Education Wonder League gives prizes to the UK teams with the best scores and creates a community for UK teachers take part in training, share ideas and learn from each other. It's free to take part - all you need is a Dash and Dot robot and some basic crafting materials.

What is needed to take part?

What is required?

  • A supervising adult coach, usually a teacher or parent
  • A team of 1 to 5 students. Students in a team should be in one of 2 age categories:
    • 6-8
    • 9-11
  • One Dash robot and one Dot robot
  • A compatible tablet or mobile device for programming
  • Internet access to download and upload materials
  • A 150x240cm grid of 30cm squares (a 5x8 grid) You can purchase a ready-to-go printed vinyl mat from Rapid (70-1119) or you can make your own using an old vinyl flooring offcut (see if your local carpet/flooring shop has any going spare) or by just marking the grid on the floor with tape.
  • Some basic crafting materials - these will be outlined in the missions and are usually items like paper cups, pipe cleaners, kitchen roll tubes, tennis balls etc.

How does it work?

  • The first step is to find a coach - an adult mentor who will look after the team and facilitate them working on the challenges within the Wonder League. No experience is necessary!
  • Once you have a team, the coach must register the team here. Registration is completely free.
  • Until the main missions are released, coaches will be able to download mini-missions from the Coaches Corner section of the portal which are perfect for practicing the skills required for the Wonder League.
  • On 16th September, the official Missions will be released. Typically, there are 5 missions in total. Coaches will be able to download the mission documents from the Coaches Corner section of the portal.
  • As your team works through the missions, keep a log of the work you are doing. This is not mandatory for the first 5 missions but will be required if you are selected for the Invitational Round so it's good practice to do it from the start. There is a template available to download from the Coaches Corner with some simple sections to help you record relevant information.
  • Record your points scored for each mission on the Mission document. These will be required for the submission.
  • Make a note of the Blockly Key for your code as this will also be required for the submission. The Blockly Key is a unique key that will allow the judges to see your code for that mission.
  • Upload your submission before the Submission Deadline to be eligible for selection to the Invitational Round.
