Electronic components sensitive to ESD should be bagged up to reduce the threat of static discharge. There are numerous ways to do this, from anti-static to conductive and static shielding bags. But which bag do you need?

Pink antistatic bags


Pink bags offer the lowest level of ESD protection. They are “anti-static”, protecting any ESD discharge from its contents from leaking outside, but no shielding. Pink anti-static bags hold no charge but are only able to prevent 10% of an external charge from penetrating the bag. They are ideal for nuts, bolts and any components made from materials that create a 'triboelectric' charge – a static charge generated by friction between materials.

Black conductive bag


Black polyethylene bags provide a degree of shielding, preventing 30% of charge, but there is no dieelectric layer to isolate the components or device inside the bag. The material of the bag is itself highly conductive, dissipating charges quickly but not completely eliminating the potential for static build up. The bags are moisture resistant but their opaque nature means that the components inside can only be identified by unsealing the bag.

Static shield bag


Silver shielding bags are the ‘gold standard’ of ESD protection. They work in the same way as a Faraday Cage, with a multi-layer structure. An outer and inner surface dissipative layer contains an antistat coating and a conductive metal – usually aluminium – which provides the Faraday effect, more or less completely protecting the contents of the bag from ESD. Silver shielded bags will stop 97% of a 1000V pulse from reaching inside.
