Rapid become associate members of CLEAPSS
Rapid is delighted to announce that it has recently become an associate member of CLEAPSS, an organisation that supports the teaching of Science, Design & Technology and Art in secondary schools with a wide range of resources and information.

What is CLEAPSS?

Originally founded in 1965, CLEAPSS is a consortium of local education authorities that throughout its history has promoted best practice in how Science is taught in primary and secondary schools. In recent years it has added Design & Technology and Art & Design to its remit, and now provides model risk assessments (MRAs) for practical activities in these subjects for both primary and secondary schools and colleges. For schools, who are registered automatically by their LEA, the benefits of membership of CLEAPSS includes a complete framework of guidance to comply with the Health and Safety obligations associated with these subjects.

In addition to Health & Safety guidance CLEAPSS provides advice on ways to carry out practical activities so that they are functional, safe and are effective at supporting learning. Its testing facility on the campus of Brunel University has enabled CLEAPSS to develop a wealth of experience devising and evaluating practical activities and equipment. CLEAPSS is also a major training provider delivering over 200 one-day CPD courses for science and D&T teachers and technicians each year. CLEAPSS advice and guidance publications are recognised by Ofsted and the Health and Safety Executive as the definitive basis for safe practice for practical work in schools.

As an associate member Rapid has access to the complete range of CLEAPSS publications, resources and information, and can support schools with their work in making laboratories and workshops safe and inspiring places for students to learn. For example, during the coronavirus pandemic, Rapid was able to circulate guidance relating to the measures schools were required to follow when reopening D&T workshops. "I am delighted that Rapid has joined CLEAPSS as an associate member", said Jennifer King of Rapid. "This will ensure that we are able to stay fully informed of the latest developments in the practical teaching of science, D&T and art, any regulatory or health and safety changes and make this information available to primary and secondary schools as soon as possible."
