Follow WEEE regulations when disposing of LEDs, says expert Find News
July 29, 2010

Businesses who purchase LED technology should consider the importance of disposing of it in accordance with Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations.

This is the view of Frank Craven, membership development manager for lamp recycling scheme Recolight, who reminded companies that LEDs have been in the scope of the regulations since May 2009.

In a column for LEDs Magazine, the expert stated that LED technology is likely to be named specifically as part of the directive when it is recast in 2010-11, which means that companies should look to establish proper recycling infrastructures now.

He said schemes such as Recolight, which has become a key driver of recycling products since being founded by companies such as GE, Osram and Philips, can play a key role in this.

"By ensuring all in-scope companies comply with the WEEE regulations, the lighting industry can continue to lead the way in recycling," added Mr Craven.

Earlier this week it was revealed that the WEEE recycling sector is currently planning a new TV advertising campaign to make householders more aware of the need to recycle electronic components.
