Solid state drives (SSDs) provide an increase in computer battery times, faster booting speeds and safer storage, according to one industry expert.
Jim Handy, an analyst with Objective Analysis, says the devices are likely to prove very popular with those in industry as they can withstand heavy falls and other impacts.
Should a laptop be dropped in an industrial workplace, Mr Handy says "the SSD can be easily removed from the shattered PC and placed into a new PC, getting that foreman back to work in a few minutes time."
Objective Analysis research indicates the use of SSDs in the enterprise sector could grow by 90 per cent per annum over the next five years, reaching 4.1 million units by 2015.
The firm expects this growth to go hand in hand with a fall in prices as the components required for manufacturing become cheaper.
Earlier this month, an IDC report entitled The Digital Universe Decade - Are You Ready? predicted the amount of information created and stored annually will reach 35 trillion gigabytes by 2020.
