Viridor has opened a new £9 million Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) facility on Merseyside after its plant was left wrecked by fire two years ago.
The new premises has the ability to cope with up to 40,000 tonnes of WEEE a year and will offer two different forms of recycling on the same site, one to look after small WEEE and one that will take on fridges.
Viridor was not previously able to recycle small WEEE so this represents a first for the company, and could see collection rates rise as a result, letsrecycle.com reports.
Mike Hellings, Viridor´s managing director, told the website: "With clever deployment of technology and a skilled workforce we can recover 90 per cent of that volume. It´s part of a state-of-the-art recycling operation to have very high standards."
Simon Boyd, the facility´s manager, also told the website: "Some plants have one line where they run on or another through it but we took the decision to have two lines."
The WEEE directive came into force in January 2007 and aims to reduce the amount of electrical and electronic equipment being produced by promoting re-use, refurbishment and recycling.
