Centrica, the firm which owns British Gas, has pledged to do more to promote microgeneration, as fluctuating energy prices continue to bite households and businesses up and down the country.
The firm resolved to do more to limit the impact of fluctuating gas prices in the future by establishing a new plan for growth that centres around households adopting microgeneration technology.
It believes that microgeneration will be worth £12 billion a year by 2020 and also announced the provision of 1,100 new green collar jobs to cope with the expected demand.
Nick Luff, finance director, said: "Centrica is no longer just a residential energy supply, it´s diversifying and investing in wind power, nuclear, gas storage, gas development and a wider range of downstream energy services like smart metres.
"There´s room on the balance sheet for acquisitions too."
The government´s clean energy cash back scheme, known as feed-in-tariffs, launches on April 1st 2010 and aims to reward households and businesses for adopting microgeneration by paying them for any surplus energy they supply to the National Grid.
