Following the government´s announcement of the feed-in-tariffs (FITs), a leading green expert has claimed that the adoption of solar panels and wind turbines is a "realistic proposition" for homeowners and businesses.
The government estimated that if a solar panel is installed on a home, it could bring in £900 of clean energy cash-back payments, as well as save £140 on a typical household energy bill.
Andrew Moore, managing director of British Eco Energy, believes that the technology is no longer the preserve of the rich and a few committed greens and that microgeneration could provide a viable source of energy and income for many homes.
He said: "This is the first time solar panels have become a realistic proposition not just for homeowners, but for businesses as well.
"This announcement takes renewables from being a niche market for very green people or very wealthy people, to something that most people can do. It´s very exciting. It´s a major shift."
The government intends to hit the ground running with FITs and households or communities which adopt microgeneration technology from April will be able to claim payments for the green electricity they produce.
