Amateur radio clubs across the UK are gearing up to observe the 2009 World Aids Day by linking up with fellow enthusiasts over three specially set-up bands.
With this years World Aids Day set to be commemorated on December 1st, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has confirmed that a special amateur radio station will be operating out of its Geneva headquarters for the first week of the month.
The station, which will have the call sign 4U1AIDS, is calling on radio enthusiasts to make contact with it, with amateur stations that link up to it on three separate bands to be sent a special commemorative certificate.
In addition, those stations that hook up to Switzerland on five amateur radio bands will be awarded a commemorative UNAIDS pennant, while those that make contact with 4U1AIDS with a QSL card will receive a one-off QSL card as a token of appreciation.
Among those groups set to take part in the initiative is the Southgate Amateur Radio Club in north London, which has called on its members to give their support to raising awareness of the ongoing fight against HIV and AIDS.
The first World Aids Day was held back in 1988, with UNAIDS estimates placing the number of people living with HIV at around 33 million.
