The global recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) will be improved if connections are made between the UK and China.
That is the opinion of Keith Freegard, director of WEEE scheme Axion Polymers, who believes that the environment and companies involved in the recycling of old devices will benefit from an improved relationship.
The expert told Plastics & Rubber Weekly that trading partnerships are important, considering that 70 to 80 per cent of all recyclable plastics are transported to the country for processing.
"Huge amounts of agricultural and industrial films, post-consumer and WEEE plastics are exported to China because sufficient recycling capacity does not exist here in the UK to recover these materials economically," he explained.
nebusiness.co.uk recently reported that Northumberland company WEEE Recycling Electronics Ltd is to encourage local businesses and councils to participate in the environmentally-friendly practice.
Rapid is a member of WeeeCare (www.weeecare.com) and is committed to the WEEE regulations. The Rapid membership number is WEE/DJ0003ZR and the Weeecare phone number is 0844 800 2004. All WEEE products are marked with the Weelybin symbol.
