The UK is far behind European countries such as Germany when it comes to implementing microgeneration systems on business premises and residential properties.
That is the opinion of Smart Energy Services, which provides news on the progress of smart meter operations around the world.
It said that Germany brought in legislation forcing energy companies to pay back residents with microgeneration systems installed more than 20 years ago.
In this time it has reduced its carbon output by 23 per cent, the website said.
"From huge smart grid projects and massive wind and solar farms to smaller microgeneration projects at the home to new appliances, Germany is taking energy efficiency very seriously," it said.
UK homeowners looking to install microgeneration systems on their properties may receive extra help getting started through the Energy Saving Trust´s The Home Energy Pay as You Save pilot scheme, it was recently revealed.
