Electrolink, a compliance scheme for recycling waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), has said that recent legal battles should not affect the company councils choose for the service.
Fellow scheme Repic recently challenged the government over its regulations, stating that it was unfair that some services had access to WEEE at civic amenity sites which could boost their collection statuses, according to letsrecycle.com.
Repic were beaten in the court case, and now Electrolink, a Scottish WEEE recycling firm, has said that local authorities (LAs) will receive the same service from whichever company they decide to go with, regardless of civic amenity resources.
Barry Van Danzig, spokesperson for Electrolink, told the news provider: "The real beneficiary is ... the environment and the LA, as the LA can select the scheme that will work in the best interests of the environment rather than simply trying to comply with the Regulations at the lowest possible cost to producers."
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council in Hampshire is the first to sign up to a service for recycling WEEE from the Midex firm.
Rapid is a member of WeeeCare (www.weeecare.com) and is committed to the WEEE regulations. The Rapid membership number is WEE/DJ0003ZR and the Weeecare phone number is 0844 800 2004. All WEEE products are marked with the Weelybin symbol.
