The biggest power-generating wind farm is to be built 12 miles off the coast of Kent in time for the London 2012 Olympics.
E.ON, the German firm contracted for the construction along with Dong Energy and Masdar, gave the go-ahead to build the London Array wind farm with a £2 million investment.
With 341 turbines over 90 square miles, by the time of its completion the wind farm will be able to provide electricity for over a quarter of the residents of the capital and will help the government in its plans to create a low-carbon economy.
Prime minister Gordon Brown said of the development: "The London Array is a flagship project in our drive to cut emissions by 80 per cent by 2050 and meet future energy needs. The UK is a world leader in offshore wind farms, creating jobs and prosperity for the economy."
The government recently announced that it would introduce feed-in tariffs for residents and businesses which install microgeneration systems such as solar power or wind turbines on their premises, according to the Guardian.
