Information and communication technology (ICT) teaching in primary schools is set to include learning about Twitter, Wikipedia and blogging in a new overhaul of the national curriculum.
According to the Guardian, Sir Jim Rose, the former head of the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted), has suggested that pupils should be taught about the new social technologies before the age of 11.
Sir Jim, who was appointed by ministers to revamp the curriculum, wants to see the teaching of technology in place of learning about the Victorian era and the Second World War. Ministers, however, have reassured that those subjects will not be dropped.
Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, said: "They are much more sensible programmes of study. Children need to be enthused by learning, so they want to learn and gain the skills which will enable them to learn in later life."
Primary school children at Mosslands School in Merseyside have already been trialing web games in a scheme to get them interested in science and engineering, according to the Wirral Globe.
