Los Angeles is to replace its 140,000 existing street lights with LEDs in a five-year project.
The scheme will begin later this year and is being funded by a loan from former president Bill Clinton´s charitable foundation, who launched it.
According to city authorities, the move will cut street light power usage by 40 per cent and save $48 million (£34 million) in the first seven years and $10 million for each year thereafter.
Mr Clinton said: "If every city followed the example of Los Angeles and reduced the electricity used by their streetlights by 50 per cent, it would be equivalent to eliminating more than two and a half of those coal plants per year."
The new LED lights will have a lifespan of 12 years, twice that of the current fixtures.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that a £1 million scheme could see the new Weston Grand Pier illuminated at night with green and blue LED lights.
Pier owners Kerry and Michelle Michael are currently in talks with North Somerset planners to finalise details of the new structure after the previous one was destroyed by fire last summer.
