More than 20 billion units of white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are to be sold in 2008, according to a business intelligence firm.
The study by Report Buyer concluded that growth in the market in the short term will be primarily driven by mobile phone handsets, which are currently the largest market for LEDs.
According to the report LED Driver ICS: Application Drivers, Technology Developments & Product Introduction, notebook computers are set to overtake mobile phones as the primary market for LEDs in 2010.
It also predicts further growth in the automotive segment as LED headlamps and LED interior lighting makes inroads into the existing lighting technology.
The flexibility of LEDs has been seen in the vast array of uses they have been put to.
Recently they have made appearances on the catwalk, the battlefield and the high design home.
They are prized because they consume less energy than traditional light sources and provide light at a lower heat.
