Today is the first national day dedicated to energy saving in the home.
As part of E-day people are being urged to switch off unused gadgets and appliances for 24 hours from 18:00 on Wednesday February 27th.
It is hoped that the day will highlight the impact that small energy saving methods can have and their potential impact on household bills.
Among the steps people can take are turning off lights as they leave a room, turning televisions off standby and unplugging mobile phones.
Energy consumption throughout the country will be monitored by the National Grid.
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com said: "E-Day is a great opportunity for us all to stop and think before we plug-in and power up our gadgets and gizmos.
"We are increasingly dependent on technology and this is coming at a high cost to ourselves and the planet. If we become more aware of the electricity we use we can work towards reducing our bills and the impact on the environment."
