A range of energy saving devices, from photovoltaic solar panels to ground source heat pumps, is being tested in a new development in Norfolk.
Some 15 new homes at Lingwood, near Yarmouth, are being built with different eco-friendly energy-saving devices which new constructions will be expected to have from 2016.
After handing the wooden houses over to owners, their energy bills and power usage will be monitored to see which devices provide the best energy savings and cut electricity and gas consumption.
Scientists at the University of East Anglia (UEA) will keep tabs on the energy expenditure of each house over an internet connection to each home.
Jane Powell, UEA lecturer in energy management policy who is monitoring the homes, said: "It will be interesting to see which type of eco-friendly home saves the most energy and, in the light of government plans for all new homes to be carbon neutral from 2016, it will provide valuable information."
