What is Bigshot?
Bigshot is an exciting new educational concept: a build-it-yourself camera that provides a complete learning experience and creative experience. As children put together the Bigshot components they learn about the science and engineering behind photography – optics, mechanics, electromagnetism, electronics and image processing. Once built, Bigshot is a fully functioning 3 megapixel digital camera, with viewfinder, flash, timer and settings wheel – giving the opportunity to frame like a professional and even take 3D images.
The creator of Bigshot hopes it will help children understand the science behind photography by demystifying the inner workings of the camera. "It's about getting kid's hands dirty," says Prof. Shree Nayar. "In an age when software rules I want kids to know how to build hardware. We describe concepts that children would normally encounter at college, but try to make them accessible to an eight- or ten-year-old."
“Unlike a camera that you can snap together and you don’t have to worry about the parts inside, in this case each component that the kid is handling has to be safe and be something that reveals a concept.”
