The LT3486 from Linear Technology is a fixed frequency dual boost (step-up) DC/DC converter that is specifically designed to drive up to sixteen white LEDs (eight in series per converter) at a constant current. Series connection of the LEDs provides uniform brightness and two independent converters are capable of driving asymmetric LED strings. Dimming of the two LED strings can be controlled independently and internal circuitry enables a dimming range of 1000:1. The operating frequency of this device can be set via an external resistor over a wide range. Applications for this device include Notebook PC displays, LED camera light for cell phones, automotive dashboard lighting, avionics displays.
